In his “Allegory of Faith” Vermeer presents an array of religious symbols laid on a black-and-white floor.

Were we to reflect this painting, the mirror would now show the floor to be white-and-black, while the religious symbols would be replaced by symbols of Unfaithfulness.

In this light the “Allegory of Faith” becomes, in turn, an “Allegory of Unfaithfulness”.
